Retinitis Pigmentosa (RP)

Retinitis Pigmentosa is an inherited eye disease that causes progressive damage to your retina, leading to vision loss. It affects your peripheral and night vision, making it difficult to see in low light. While there’s no cure, treatments can help manage symptoms and slow progression.

Our Micro-acupuncture treatments, are a specialized form of acupuncture, that can play a key role in improving the symptoms of RP by targeting specific acupuncture points around the eyes and other related body areas. In micro acupuncture, the needles used are smaller, finer, and more delicate than traditional acupuncture needles, which allows for more precise stimulation of the acupuncture points, including those around the eyes, the head, and the back.

Macular Degeneration

Macular degeneration is an age-related condition that affects the macula, the part of your retina responsible for central vision. This leads to blurred or distorted vision in the center of your visual field, making tasks like reading and recognizing faces more difficult.

Retinal Detachment

Retinal detachment occurs when your retina separates from the underlying tissue, causing sudden vision loss. Symptoms include flashes of light and shadows across your vision. It’s a medical emergency requiring immediate treatment to avoid permanent damage.

Glaucoma

Glaucoma damages your optic nerve, often due to increased eye pressure, leading to gradual vision loss. It typically affects peripheral vision and can result in blindness if untreated. Regular eye exams are key for early detection.

Stargardt’s Syndrome

Stargardt’s Syndrome causes progressive vision loss by affecting your macula. It’s the most common form of inherited juvenile macular degeneration, typically starting in childhood or adolescence. There’s no cure, but ongoing research offers hope.

Diabetic Retinopathy

Diabetic retinopathy occurs when high blood sugar damages blood vessels in your retina, leading to vision problems. It can cause blindness if not treated. Regular eye exams and good blood sugar control can help prevent damage.

Optic Neuritis

Optic neuritis is inflammation of your optic nerve, often causing sudden vision loss in one eye. It’s linked to multiple sclerosis but can occur alone. Treatment with corticosteroids helps reduce inflammation and recovery is common.

Cataracts

Cataracts cause clouding of the lens in your eye, leading to blurry vision. Symptoms include difficulty seeing at night and glare from lights. Cataract surgery is a highly effective treatment to restore your vision.

Optic Nerve Atrophy

Optic nerve atrophy occurs when the optic nerve is damaged, leading to vision loss. Causes include trauma or conditions like glaucoma. Once damage occurs, it’s usually irreversible, but treatment can help manage the cause.

Lazy Eye (Amblyopia)

Lazy eye occurs when one eye has reduced vision, usually because your brain favors the other eye. Treatment like patching the good eye can help improve vision in the lazy eye.

Dry Eyes

Dry eyes occur when your eyes don’t produce enough tears or the tears evaporate too quickly. It causes irritation and blurry vision. Lubricating drops, lifestyle changes, and medications can help relieve symptoms.

Usher Syndrome

Usher syndrome is a genetic disorder that causes both hearing and vision loss, including progressive vision loss from Retinitis Pigmentosa. Though there’s no cure, hearing aids and vision devices can help you manage symptoms.

Uveitis

Uveitis is inflammation of the uvea, causing pain, redness, and blurred vision. It can result from infections or autoimmune diseases. If untreated, it can cause serious complications, but treatment can help manage inflammation.

Myopia (Nearsightedness)

Myopia causes blurry vision for distant objects while close-up vision remains clear. It occurs when the eyeball is too long, or the cornea is too curved, which prevents light entering the eye from focusing properly on the retina.

Retinal Occlusion

Retinal occlusion happens when a blood vessel in your retina is blocked, causing sudden vision loss. Symptoms include blurry vision or a shadow over your field of vision. Treatment varies but can include injections or surgery.

Childhood Retinitis Pigmentosa

Our 3-Step Care Process

Step 1: Case Evaluation

During your first visit, we'll assess the specifics of your case, review your medical history, and request recent vision tests (acuity, visual field, contrast, color vision) to establish a baseline. This helps us track progress and adjust treatment as needed. You'll also receive a personalized care plan to move forward.

Step 2: Micro Acupuncture Treatments

Each session involves 2-3 treatments lasting 30 minutes with a one-hour break in between. Treatment methods may include micro-acupuncture, acu-laser/e-moxa, and electro-acupuncture. Nutritional supplements and herbs may also be recommended.

Step 3: Evaluating Progress

After 10 sessions, will ask you to retake vision tests to assess the results. We also provide lifestyle, diet, and supplement suggestions to support ongoing eye health. Usually 85% of patients respond well, but some may not benefit from our treatment.

What Our Degerative Eye Conditions Patients Have To Say ...

I have an eye disease that for years I’ve been told there is nothing that can be done. While I know there is no cure, I have been visiting Dr. Chapa and I have seen some positive results. No —I have not regained the vision I have lost BUT I have seen substantial improvement in my night vision and the vision I DO have is sharp and clear. I will continue to visit Dr. Chapa to maintain the vision that I have not already lost. He and his staff are very helpful and I would encourage anyone with eye conditions (or other issues) to contact them and see if he can help you. Acupuncture has been a great experience for me and I will continue to use it as long as I am able.

Karol O.

I saw Dr. Chapa a couple of months ago for a problem with my vision. After discussing the problem, and what I thought to be the cause of it, Dr. Chapa astutely diagnosed the root cause of the problem and explained the treatment plan. Since beginning treatment, I have experienced significant improvement with my vision problem, so much so that an examination by my ophthalmologist last week confirmed that I no longer need the addition of prisms to my eye glasses prescription. When I briefly described the treatment I received from Dr. Chapa to my ophthalmologist, he was amazed and said that usually patients who require prisms don’t revert back to not needing them. I can’t recommend Dr. Chapa highly enough as a skilled, knowledgeable, experienced and compassionate practitioner. He is literally the “go to” person for a whole host of health issues.
