What Is Bell's Palsy?

Bells-Palsy-Experts-Dallas-Texas-Woman-AIMC-2024-768x768

Bell’s Palsy is a sudden, temporary facial paralysis caused by inflammation of the facial nerve (cranial nerve VII). It affects more than 40,000 Americans each year, and symptoms can significantly impact quality of life.

  • Facial droop or asymmetry on one side
  • Difficulty closing the eye on the affected side
  • Impaired speech and difficulty with facial expressions
  • Drooling and altered taste sensation

Traditional Western Medical Approaches

Medication

Corticosteroids like prednisone reduce inflammation. Antivirals and antibiotics are usually given and considered standard medical treatment for 1-2 weeks.

Eye Protection

Eye drops, ointments, and patches prevent corneal damage when the eye cannot close completely. These are for temporary relief only, and will not restore normal function in the long run.

Physical Therapy

Facial exercises, massage, and electrical stimulation may help maintain muscle tone, but will not completely heal the affected area.

Surgery

Rarely needed but may be considered for severe cases without improvement after several months. Usually not covered by Insurance and success rates are usually low and limited.

How acupuncture works for bells palsy recovery

How Acupuncture Works for Bell's Palsy

Mechanisms of Action
  • Microcirculation: Increases blood flow to facial nerves and muscles
  • Anti-inflammatory: Reduces swelling around the facial nerve
  • Neuroregeneration: Promotes nerve repair and function
  • Muscle tone: Prevents atrophy during recovery period
  • Ease Nerve Pressure: Releases tight or tired muscles that can press on nerves, especially the facial nerve, relieving discomfort.
  • Neurobiological Effects: Stimulates the brain to release endorphins and new stem cells to help heal your face.

Traditional Acupuncture Technique

Using traditional facial acupuncture points along meridians which are related to facial nerves

Distal Acupuncture Technique

Our physicians have learned many different techniques from China, Taiwan, South Korea and Japan in which they use distal acupuncture points (usually in the arms and legs for example) which have been shown to help facial paralysis

dry-needling for bells palsy recovery

Dry Needling For Bell's Palsy Recovery

(Yes, it's a form of Acupuncture which we have mastered by having the most complete training)

When it comes to your health, training matters. That’s why patients trust Dr. Chapa—he has earned the world’s highest certification in Dry Needling, giving you the confidence that every treatment is performed with expert precision and designed for lasting relief.

Stimulates Nerve & Muscle Function

Dry needling helps “wake up” weakened or paralyzed muscles by targeting trigger points. This stimulation improves nerve-to-muscle communication, which is important when facial nerves are recovering from inflammation or damage caused by Bell’s Palsy.

Reduces Muscle Tension

When certain facial muscles are weak, others may overcompensate and tighten. Dry needling releases these tense areas, improving symmetry and preventing long-term stiffness or abnormal pulling of the face (called synkinesis).

Enhances Blood Flow and Healing

Dry needling helps “wake up” weakened or paralyzed muscles by targeting trigger points. This stimulation improves nerve-to-muscle communication, which is important when facial nerves are recovering from inflammation or damage caused by Bell’s Palsy.

Electric cables attached to acupuncture needles

Micro Electro Stimulation (MES) Acupuncture Helps Bell's Palsy

Promotes reinnervation and functional recovery

MES facilitates motor and sensory neuron regeneration, helping to re-establish nerve connections.

Helps with facial movement

Electrostimulation acupuncture gently activates weakened facial muscles, improving coordination and expression. The therapy enhances nerve conduction so signals travel more effectively from the brain to the muscles. It also supports the repair and maturation of regenerated nerve fibers, promoting stronger connections that restore facial mobility.

Enhances nerve growth and repair!

By increasing ATP, MES stimulates cellular processes that accelerate healing.

Yes, Estim HELPS ( when used properly )

Our team is aware that there are physicians that claim that electro stimulation should always be avoided because it can cause synkinesis ( involuntary facial muscle movements ). This is why it's very important to ONLY be treated by someone trained and specializes in Bell's Palsy treatments, with many years of training and experience.

TheraFace Pro Integrative Therapy

Relieves Facial Muscle Tension

TheraFace Pro helps relieve facial muscle tension and improve circulation to affected areas. This can feel soothing and also assists with easing tightness or discomfort.

Toning for Muscle Stimulation

The microcurrent feature is designed to gently stimulate and tone facial muscles, and improve muscle responsiveness in areas affected by nerve weakness.

LED Soothes Discomfort

The LED red and infrared light setting offer a calming warmth that can reduce soreness or irritation. These light wavelengths are commonly used in skin therapies to promote healing and collagen production, which contributes to overall facial comfort during recovery.

Laser acupuncture for Bells Palsy Patients in Dallas Irving

Laser Acupuncture Non-Invasive Bell's Palsy Treatment

Reduces Facial Inflammation

The gentle light energy of laser acupuncture helps calm inflammation around the facial nerves, reducing pressure and irritation that contribute to weakness and discomfort.

Eases Muscle Tension and Stiffness

By stimulating key acupuncture points without needles, laser therapy can ease facial muscle tension, improve mobility, and reduce stiffness—making it easier for patients to smile, blink, and regain facial expressions.

Promotes Nerve Regeneration

Laser stimulation encourages blood flow and cellular repair, which supports nerve recovery and helps restore normal function in the affected areas of the face.

Non-Invasive Painless Treatment

Laser acupuncture is a safe, gentle, and non-invasive therapy option—especially beneficial for patients who may be sensitive to traditional needling. It provides effective support for healing without discomfort or downtime.

Herbal Medicine Aids in Bell's Palsy Recovery

herbal medicine supports faster bells palsy recovery

Oriental medicine addresses Bell’s palsy by targeting the root causes of facial paralysis. Herbal formulas are prescribed to:

  • Support nerve repair and regeneration
  • Boost immune response and reduce inflammation
  • Improve blood circulation
  • Address underlying imbalances that may have contributed to the condition

Unlike one-size-fits-all approaches, herbal formulas are customized based on the patient’s unique diagnosis pattern and adjusted throughout recovery for optimal, timely results.

(Don’t worry, no cooking involved!)

Most of our herbal medicines come in capsule or tablet form, and many of our herbs are sourced from Taiwan and South Korea (they have some of the highest quality standards).

Cupping & Moxibustion Help Bell's Palsy

Face Cupping Bells Palsy
